Setting Up Global

  • Updated

Swap Global will integrate into Shopify to enable cross-border commerce and shipping. This will allow you to handle tax and duty calculations, collect taxes, support international shipping, and manage tax reports and remittances.

Prerequisites

To successfully set up Global, there are a few things your Shopify store must comply with.

  • You should be on the Shopify Advanced or Plus plan. If you are on the Basic plan or ‘Shopify’ plan, you must be on an annual, rather than monthly, subscription.
  • If you use a cross-border provider already (e.g., Shopify’s in-house service, Global-e, Zonos), fully remove it before continuing.
  • Taxes and Duties should not already be calculated through Shopify. To check if they are being collected and for information on disabling this, please refer to this article.

Step 1: Install Global

  1. Download & install the Swap Global app from the app store.
  2. Provide Swap with permission to access Shipping and Delivery. The only Shopify permission needed for this is ‘Manage Settings.’

Step 2: Set Up Your Shipping Zones and Market

To enable Global shipping, you will have to specify shipping zones. Shipping zones are specific geographical areas to which merchants can ship their products. These zones allow you to set shipping rates and delivery options based on the destination. Swap Global needs these zones to calculate shipping rates, taxes, and duties.

⚠️ If your store already has international shipping zones, you can continue to step 3.

📖 To learn more about Shipping Zones, please refer to this article.

📖 To learn more about Shopify Markets, please refer to this article.

  1. In Shopify, go to Settings → Markets, and click on “Add Market”.
    • Please note that Shopify automatically creates markets. To use these, simply activate them.
  2. Select the countries you wish to have in this market. This will allow you to send orders to these countries.
  3. Save the new market.
  4. Go to Settings → Shipping and Delivery and click “General shipping rates.”
  5. Add a Shipping Zone based on one or more countries in the new market. If all countries have the same shipping rules, they can all be under the same shipping zone. If the rules differ, the market should be split into multiple Shipping Zones.
    1. Please note: the Shipping Zones in Shopify must have rates. These rates will then be replaced by the rates calculated by Global. If Global is disabled for any reason, these are the rates Shopify will fall back on.

Step 3: Importing your Shipping Zones to Swap

After completing the previous steps, your onboarding manager must enable your store.

The first time you log into your Swap Dashboard after your store has been enabled, you will receive a pop-up letting you import your existing Shipping Zones from Shopify.

  1. On the pop-up, click ‘Let’s start.’

    • If you have skipped this step previously, select ‘Shipping zones’ from the menu on the left. Then click ‘Migrate Shipping Zones.’

  2. Select the Shipping Zones you wish to import into Swap. Swap Global will be the carrier for these zones and calculate the shipping, taxes, and duties.

  3. Click ‘Migrate Zones To Swap’ to start the migration of the Shipping Zones.

    • If a zone has already been migrated, it will be greyed out.

  4. The shipping zones in Shopify and Swap should now be updated. The newly imported Shipping Zones in Swap will be inactive. You must activate them if you wish to have the rates within these Shipping Zones controlled by Swap Global.

⚠️ The zone should be marked as "Already Migrated" if the Swap carrier service is already in the zone. However, a known bug causes it to be marked as "Already migrated" if any carrier service is already in the zone. Solutions for now are to remove the carrier services from a zone before migrating it or migrate manually.

Step 4: Final Check

Once you have added your Shipping Zones to Swap, it is time to test Swap Global.

  1. Go to Shopify settings → Shipping and Delivery and click “General shipping rates.”

  2. Confirm that Swap is the only rate listed in the shipping zones, except for the domestic market.

  3. Within the Swap Dashboard, please review the shipping rates to confirm they are correct.

  4. Go to your store and add items to the basket.

  5. Enter a shipping address outside your domestic market to see if Global calculates the taxes, duties and shipping correctly.
