Understanding Shopify Markets

  • Updated

Shopify Markets is a cross-border management tool that allows you to manage your international e-commerce operations. You need to set these up to start selling internationally. Shopify Markets provides features that cater to various markets, such as local currencies, languages, payment methods, and shipping solutions.

💡 Shopify automatically adds and activates the Domestic Market, creating inactive “European Union” and “International” Markets.

What is Shopify Markets

Shopify Markets is a feature that allows you to manage and optimize international sales from a single Shopify store. It enables shops to create customized shopping experiences for global markets by localizing the storefront with relevant languages, currencies, and payment methods.

Shopify Markets also provides tools for managing international pricing, duties, and taxes, ensuring a seamless shopping experience for customers worldwide while simplifying the merchant's operations. With Swap Global, international pricing, such as duties and taxes, is already handled.

How are Shopify Markets related to Shopify Shipping Zones?

Shopify Markets determines which countries customers can shop from and can set country-specific settings. If a country is not in an active market, customers within that country cannot shop in the store.

On the other hand, Shopify Shipping Zones determine which shipping rates are displayed for customers checking out in each country. If a country is not in an active Shopify shipping zone, customers within that country cannot complete checkout.

Therefore, a country must be within both an active Shopify market and an active Shopify shipping zone for a customer in that country to complete their shopping journey.

⚠ If a country is in a market but not a shipping zone, or vice versa, Shopify will display a warning in the related settings sections.

General Features and Recommendations

It is recommended that merchants enable Country/Region Redirection and Local Currencies on the market preferences page. These features are not required for Swap Global to function but allow customers to shop in their local currency, enhancing their shopping experience.

Additionally, ensure that Tax Inclusion is disabled in the settings.

Limitations of Shopify Markets

While Shopify Markets offers extensive tools for managing international sales, it has some limitations:

  1. Market Limit: Depending on your Shopify plan, you can manage a maximum of 50 markets.
  2. Customization Restrictions: Full customization of each market's storefront may be limited by the plan features.
  3. Complexity in Management: Managing multiple markets with different settings can become complex and require additional resources.
  4. Currency and Language Support: Not all currencies and languages are supported, which might limit the reach in some regions.
